Ashlar repeats a fixed "module" of interlocking rectangles. This tool reports each size you need to order by module count — the module shapes stay the same whether your patio is 200 or 800 sq ft.

How Our Formulas Work

The calculator uses standard estimating assumptions for material volume, waste, coverage and ordering allowances. Actual quantities vary by material, supplier, site conditions and installation method. We use real material bulk densities and compaction coefficients, so your orders match actual site needs. ⌈x⌉ means rounded up to the next whole unit.

Patio Footprint

Rectangle ......... L × W L-shaped .......... A + B Circle ............ πr² Net paved = Footprint − cutout

Worked example: Example: 24 ft × 18 ft = 432 sq ft of patio

Pro rule of thumb: For an L, add the two rectangles. For a circle, use half the diameter as the radius r.

Repeat Module Coverage

2-piece 6×18 + 6×6 ........ 1.0 sq ft 3-piece 6×18 + 6×12 + 6×6 ... 1.5 sq ft Large 8×24 + 8×8 ............ 1.78 sq ft

Worked example: Example: the 2-piece module = (6×18) + (6×6) = 108 in² + 36 in² = 1.0 sq ft

Pro rule of thumb: Each module repeats identically, so the long-to-short ratio holds at any patio size.

Completed Modules

Modules = ⌈(Area ÷ module sq ft) × waste⌉

Worked example: Example: ⌈(432 sq ft ÷ 1.0) × 1.12⌉ = 484 modules

Pro rule of thumb: Cut buffers: 1.08 clean rectangle, 1.12 standard field, 1.15 borders or curves.

Pieces per Size

Total pavers = Modules × pieces per module

Worked example: Example: 484 modules × 2 pieces = 968 pavers

Pro rule of thumb: The 2-piece is one long + one short; the 3-piece adds a mid-length 6×12 in every course.

Planning Estimate

Results are estimates based on the information and assumptions provided. Actual material quantities may vary with site conditions, material specifications, installation method, waste, and supplier measurements. For construction-critical decisions, verify quantities against your supplier's specifications and any local requirements before purchasing or building.

Cut buffer: 8% running bond → 20% curved / borders.

Crushed stone: +15% compaction allowance, ≈ 1.40 tons/yd³ loose bulk density.

Bedding sand: 50 lb bag ≈ 0.5 ft³, default 1″ screed bed.

Joint sand: one 50 lb bag ≈ 75 sq ft of 1/8″ joints.

Edge & fabric: 6 ft strips, spikes ≈ every 1.4 ft; fabric +10% for seams.
