Sub-Base Aggregate

NEVER use rounded river pea gravel or clean drainage stone without fines for a base. Those stones roll against each other and will never compact into a solid, stable pad.

Bedding Layer

ASTM C33 Coarse Concrete Sand

✕ What to Avoid

CRITICAL WARNING: never use play sand, masonry sand, or limestone screenings. Play sand grains are perfectly round — they act like microscopic ball bearings, and your finished pavers will sink and roll out of alignment.

Subgrade Barrier

Geotextile Underlayment Separation Fabric

Surface Lock

Polymeric Joint Sand

Engineering Role: Interlocks the independent pavers into one monolithic surface, completely blocks weed root systems, and stops ants from excavating beneath the patio.

Apply only when the pavers and air are 100% bone dry. Blow all excess dust off the faces with a leaf blower, then mist gently to activate the polymers.

✕ What to Avoid

Do NOT apply right before a rainstorm, and never use a high-pressure hose setting to activate the sand — that washes the vital polymer binders clean out of the joints.

Perimeter Lock
